Following the huge success of last year’s Colour Moon Festival, Koh Phangan is set to do it all over again.
Koh Pangan held it’s first Colour Moon Festival last December, and the event’s second edition is set to bigger and better, with exciting activities following the theme ‘Island of Power, energised by the Moon’.
Ko Phangan is famous for its white sandy beaches and full moon parties, and it is also a centre for yoga teacher training. This year’s event promises to unveil the island’s local way of life surrounding the coconut and squid fishing industries.
Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, Governor of Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) said, “The event will unveil the island’s local way of life surrounding the coconut and squid fishing industries.”
The event aims to boost awareness of Ko Phangan as an island destination rich in culture, historical sites, and a plethora of untapped natural attractions. Here’s what the festival looked like last year:
“Few people know that King Rama V the Great of Thailand spent holidays on this beautiful island for 14 times plus two stopovers during 1888 – 1909.”
Several kings of Thailand including King Rama V the Great, King Rama VI, King Rama VII and the present His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej frequently visited Ko Phangan. Visitors can still visit the royal pavilion of King Rama V the Great near Thansadet Waterfall and the island’s three waterfalls he named there: Thansadet, Thanprapas and Thanprawet. His royal initials are inscribed on five stones nearby.
Among the events held during the five-day festival, there will be a photography competition, exhibitions, a beach party fashion show, body paint competition and bartender competition. There will also be demonstrations of the Ko Phangan way of life, a seafood floating market, live entertainment and sporting activities.
The Phangan Colour Moon Festival 2015 is jointly organised by Samui Tourism Coordination Centre, Tourism Authority of Thailand, Ko Phangan Hotel Association, Surat Thani Provincial Administration Organization, Bangkok Airways Public Company Limited and several public and private organisations. It will be held at the Phangan Royal Ship Memorial Museum, Thong Sala Pier, Ko Phangan, Surat Thani.
